NorthBay is a non-profit accredited environmental education resident camp. The organization hosts schools from all over to stay a week and teach kids environmental science, writing, and experimentation in their outdoor classrooms, creating a meaningful and fun way to connect to the environment. Since 2005, NorthBay has taught over 300,000 public school students from 350 schools. Many of the students that visit NorthBay are kids from the inner city that have never stepped into an actual forest! NorthBay is a keystone experience for many students and cultivates an understanding of why the natural environment is so important to the world we live in. In addition to environmental education, NorthBay prioritizes Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to help students understand and express their emotions in addition to navigating the world around them when facing challenges and adversity. The personal growth that these students achieve in just one week is astonishing.
Normandeau’s Peach Bottom staff recently volunteered at NorthBay fixing a degraded switchback portion of the Red Fox Trail, removing an old foot bridge impeding the natural flow of a stream, shoring existing bank structures, and removing trash from three trails and the beach. An old footbridge was disassembled and the wood was re-used to shore up bank structures, secure stair treads for some newly dug steps at the beginning of Red Fox Trail, and was used as gate poles to create a more defined route down the switchback.
In addition to the many lodging accommodations on location, NorthBay also offers an array of activities for students and groups: ziplining, kayaking and canoeing, a high ropes course, rock wall, and more. After a day full of work, NorthBay was kind enough to treat our staff to ride the zipline—a great way to end the day!
To participate in this fulfilling day, Peach Bottom staff members used their Volunteer Time Off (VTO). Officially active in January 2025, this policy allows employees 4-8 hours of paid volunteer time at the organization of their choosing each year! (The number of hours depends on whether the employee is full-time or part-time.) Our workforce is extremely excited about this new policy as it allows them to give back to their local communities during work hours without sacrificing a day’s pay.
