Client: Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
Project Highlights: Long-term contract attesting to MassDEP’s satisfaction with our work
Services Provided: Fish collection, assessment, and analysis
Since 1999, Normandeau has been conducting long-term monitoring of mercury levels in yellow perch and largemouth bass in selected lakes and ponds throughout Massachusetts. Annual field collections have been combined with vertical profiles pH; dissolved oxygen; conductivity and temperature in the deepest portion of the lake; and water quality sampling for analysis of ions, metals, nutrients, and TOC and DOC.
Each fish is assessed in the lab to obtain length, weight, sex, sexual condition, gonad weight, and scale samples. A subsample of fish flesh is removed, frozen, and sent to the Wall Experimental Lab (Mass DEP) in Lawrence, MA for analysis of mercury concentrations.
