Normandeau’s hydroacoustic services use underwater sound as a remote sensing tool to study living aquatic resources and physical attributes of ponds, lakes, rivers, estuaries and oceans. Normandeau’s Technologies

Hydroacoustic technologies used by Normandeau, and their potential applications, include the following:

Fisheries Acoustics: Fixed-location and mobile surveys using sonar (sound and navigation ranging) to quantify or describe abundance, movement, distribution, and behavior of fish and plankton.

Acoustic Hydrology: Fixed-location and mobile surveys using acoustic Doppler technology (ADCP) to quantify magnitude, volume, and direction of the movement and distribution of water, as well as turbulence and wave action. ADCPs can also be used to continuously monitor suspended sediments in the water column (e.g., plumes from dredging)

Bathymetry: Mobile surveys using echosounders to measure depth of water bodies based on two-way travel time of echoes and sound speed.

Habitat Mapping: Mobile surveys using single-beam, multi-beam, or side scan sonar to characterize the seafloor or bottom substrate based on sonar imagery or acoustic backscatter properties.
