Fine-scale Three-dimensional Acoustic Telemetry: Fixed-location hydrophone arrays have been used to quantify or describe movement, passage distribution, and behavior of tagged fish with sub-meter precision and accuracy. Normandeau staff has used this technology to evaluate fish behavior relative to existing structures at hydroelectric dams, site selection of fish passage and behavioral guidance structures, and post construction evaluation of fish passage structure effectiveness.

Large-scale Fixed-location Detection Acoustic Telemetry: Fixed-location hydrophone arrays have been used to quantify or describe fish survival, migration or movement rates, and short-term and seasonal habitat use of multiple aquatic species. Normandeau staff has used this technology to evaluate the effectiveness of riverine flow modifications to assist migration of endangered species, estimate survival probabilities associated with dam passage, compare survival among different river reaches, and evaluate habitat use of resident and anadromous fish species.

Mobile Acoustic Telemetry: Mobile surveys using a vessel-mounted hydrophone have been used independently and in conjunction with fixed-location hydrophone arrays to quantify or describe fish behavior and habitat use with high resolution in temporal and spatial scales. Typical applications have focused on continuously tracking individual fish in fresh water over large areas, such as sturgeon near large construction sites or study behavior of marine species in coastal or open waters.
