Varney Receives John H. Chafee Award for Leadership

NEWWA

Bedford, NH — The New England Water Works Association (NEWWA) presented Bob Varney, Normandeau Senior Vice President, with the John H. Chafee Distinguished Public Servant Award at the NEWWA Annual Meeting on September 20, 2010 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, ME. The award, named after the late U.S. Senator John H. Chafee of Rhode Island, "recognizes individuals or agencies that demonstrate clear leadership that embodies commitment to principles and pursues what is right while championing the causes of the environment and public health." The award goes on to say that "the recipient places the country and our society before all and diligently works to find middle ground in order that the public's good will be served." Patrick Connelly, (Weston and Sampson Engineers) who serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Water Works Association, presented Varney with the award. Among previous winners were former U.S. Senators Judd Gregg of (NH) and Lincoln Chafee (RI).

The NEWWA, established in 1882, is the New England-wide association for the drinking water and water works profession. NEWWA serves as a key resource for nearly 3,000 members, including water utility managers, water systems operators, consulting engineers, manufacturers' representatives, suppliers, educators and interested citizens.

Congratulations to Dave Paris of Manchester Water Works and Mike Covellone of Providence Water Supply who were elected President and President-Elect of NEWWA at the meeting, as well as to NEWWA Executive Director Ray Raposa for another outstanding conference. Finally, we salute Manchester Water Works for winning the "best of the best" drinking water taste test!
