Entergy Selects Normandeau for SPDES Permit Compliance Studies | Bedford, NH — Monday, July 19, 2010 — Entergy's James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. There are biological evaluation requirements that are a part of the New York State (SPDES) permit renewal for the intake and discharge, the evaluation of Installation and Verification of a Fish Handling and Return System, and a Biological Study to assess extension of the cooling water intake.
Entergy selected Normandeau Associates, who designed and is currently undertaking multi-year studies to evaluate and estimate the condition and survival of fish in the forebay and off the newly installed Ristroph traveling screens. These data will be used to estimate the potential reduction in impingement mortality for the Station if a fish return system is subsequently designed, installed, and operated.
Dr. Mark Mattson, Normandeau's Project Manager, said that “the objective of performing an impingement reduction evaluation in Lake Ontario is to estimate the percent reduction in impingement mortality obtained if the present JAF cooling water intake was moved further offshore to one of several proposed locations at either the 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 foot (ft) water depths.” Normandeau is using mobile hydroacoustics surveys as the primary sampling technique to observe the abundance of fish susceptible to impingement at each of the six proposed sampling stations.
In addition to the impingement studies Normandeau is performing a multi-year entrainment reduction evaluation in Lake Ontario to estimate the percent reduction in entrainment abundance obtained if the intake is moved to one of the deeper locations.
To conduct this work efficiently and to be able to assist clients in the Great Lakes Region, Normandeau Associates has opened a regional office in Lycoming, New York. With the interest in wind energy on the Great Lakes this office will allow Normandeau to better provide renewable energy clients with environmental monitoring and permitting services cost-effectively and more efficiently. |
