Understanding the Regulatory Landscape

red knot. For over 40 years we have earned a reputation for excellence in understanding and solving complex natural resource and permitting issues within the energy industry. We maximize the effectiveness of our biological expertise by combining it with our experience in permitting and communication with regulatory agencies. This enables us to successfully guide you through the siting, planning, permitting, development, and monitoring processes.

By working closely with developers, regulators, industry trade groups, and other stakeholders, we have a well-rounded perspective on issues, as well as firsthand knowledge of and contribution to the evolving regulatory landscape. Our vision is to create win-win solutions for both clients and natural resources that achieve project compliance and provide legal protection.

Innovative Technology

Normandeau is developing scientific tools relevant to an increasingly complex regulatory environment and an ocean full of scientific uncertainties. This is evidenced by our innovative Acoustic Thermographic Offshore Monitoring (ATOM™) system for wildlife, which incorporates our Remote Bat Acoustic Technology (ReBAT™), and our aerial high resolution imaging team with APEM Ltd. of Manchester, England.

The following tools meet the demand for new, cost-effective ways to gather offshore wildlife data for wind projects.

ATOM™ (Acoustic Thermographic Offshore Monitoring)
ATOM deployment.

ATOM is a remotely operated, stationary, continuous monitoring system for birds and bats at prospective offshore wind project sites. It is designed to go beyond the capacity of radar systems to gather species-specific data for ESA compliance, as well as bird versus bat discrimination. ATOM is significantly smaller, with lower power consumption, and is less expensive and more flexible than radar. It can be deployed on a fixed platform or a large buoy.
