FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Normandeau's Patented Technology Supports the Army Corps Walla Walla District at Ice Harbor, McNary and The Dalles
Bedford, NH. February 6, 2007 – Normandeau Associates, as part of its IDIQ Contract for Biological Services, has been assisting the U.S Army Corps of Engineers with its mission to improve fish passage and survival on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. During the past year, Normandeau scientists conducted major studies to determine survival and injury rates at Ice Harbor Dam (Snake River) and The Dalles Dam (Columbia River). Using its patented balloon tagging technology, HI-Z Turb’N Tag®, Normandeau biologists assessed the impacts of three different spill patterns at each of the dams. Over 1800 fish were tested at Ice Harbor and over 2100 fish were tested at The Dalles. The Corps will utilize these results to determine which spill patterns will increase survival of salmonids during spill conditions.
The HI-Z Turb’N Tag® was also used to test three different operating levels of one of the turbines at the John Day Dam on the Columbia River. The data on injury and survival, resulting from 2100 tested fish, will be used by the Corps to improve turbine operating regimes and blade design in an effort to reduce injury and to improve passage survival.
