FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Paul Harmon of Normandeau Associates Part of the Exelon Team that Wins the Vision and Leadership Award
Stowe, Pennsylvania, July 2008 – Exelon was recently named the winner of this year’s Vision and Leadership Award given by the Nuclear Energy Institute for it Mine Water Augmentation and River Restoration Project. The team recognized for this innovative project included Normandeau Associates Senior Associate Paul Harmon, who provided expertise in the areas of water quality and aquatic biology. The project was developed to solve a long term problem of providing consumptive makeup water for the nuclear generating station, while maintaining water quality standards and instream for downstream usage by others in the watershed.
The Project Team, including Mr. Harmon, identified upstream sources of water related to former coal mining sites. One of the region’s most pressing environmental problems involves too much water stored in old coal-mining sites that is slowly contaminating local supplies. Acid mine drainage also had a negative impact on aquatic life, potable water, and recreational activity. This abundance of water could be valuable to the watershed and address the plant needs if it could be done in a safe manner. The team sought a way to address this situation. In phase one of the project, the Exelon team located and developed two additional water supplies to help offset its consumptive makeup water needs. This additional water helps feed the local river basin during dry periods and reduces the strain on the local water sources.
In the second phase of the project, the team created a River Restoration and Monitoring Fund whereby savings from the project are shared with the community. The fund supports projects that improve water quality in the watershed and river that runs alongside the plant,
Through the program, Exelon has been able to secure its own water needs at a reduced cost and improve local water supplies that help both the plant and the surrounding community. At the same time, the company’s support is helping to improve regional water management, clean up acid mine drainage, and support water quality improvement programs throughout the basin.
